On June 04, 2025, Topps placed a 'Coming Soon: 2025 Worst of Garbage Pail Kids Pre-Order' link to their frontpage 'Trending Now' section, using an ANS1 artwork image by artist TOM Bunk, where the body of the GPK page stated, "Available Soon: Topps Garbage Pail Kids" and "Upcoming Releases: 2025 Worst of Garbage Pail Kids - 40th Anniversary - Pre-Order - Coming June 10th". A 'Notify Me' link was placed on the GPK page, which stated, "Thanks for signing up! Be on the lookout for Topps Garbage Pail Kids", once completed. These sign-up notifications do not have a history of actually notifying and working, historically speaking.

The tentative release title kept changing, since Topps didn't want '40th Anniversary' as the main title, believing 'anniversary' makes the brand sound outdated and old, and wanting to draw in new and young collectors. Topps went with the long-running theme of 'Worst of..." which was a title pulled from end-of-year online mini sets poking fun at the year's strangest news articles, etcetera. However, '40th Anniversary' is still the overall release and can also be found printed below the GPK header on the sketch cards. New content for the set was completed between January and April, 2025, but most of the product was not listed within the posted online checklist; this material will be released within the next GPK release, titled 'Universe', pushed out to 2026. Due to retail store locations demanding Chrome product, this set is a hobby-only, exclusive release.

On June 06, 2025, a Topps baseball email blast was sent out, at roughly 3:00pm CT, that contained the pre-order link image within the 'Coming Soon' section of the email correspondence, simply stating '2025 Topps Worst of GPK Pre-Order' and a 'Notify Me' button.

How GPK Took Over Pop Culture. To truly understand the rise of Garbage Pail Kids, one must first understand the media landscape 40 years ago. “There were only three channels!” is a lie. Cable was around. HBO was around! Even WrestleMania, debuting in 1985, could be purchased on PPV. But the choices were so limited—and recording a show meant buying a VCR—that people generally watched a lot of the same things at the same time. There was no Internet (at least not in homes), so even minor queries had to be researched—or you called someone really smart or with an encyclopedia to ask. And while there were plenty of newspapers, they ran a lot of syndicated columns, so one writer could appear in hundreds of papers across North America at once. In other words, it wasn’t hard to start a media frenzy if something got picked up by the TV news. And if it hit the general consciousness a few days before a holiday, when people got together and caught up? Things could get Berserk Kirk very quickly. So 1985 was, in many ways, the perfect storm for a Bob Greene syndicated column to catch fire. It ran the day before Thanksgiving, telling the tale of a quiet 12-year-old 7th-grader who discovered a “Most Unpopular Student” Garbage Pail Kid “award” on his desk one day at school. Greene introduced his readers to a stunned teacher and “angry” principal (both nameless and with no indication of the school, location, or any other details), who “couldn’t believe that Topps would sell this kind of thing.” The principal went to investigate at a vague “store across from the school” and discovered more Garbage Pail Kids, sold with a piece of bubble gum, “just like old baseball cards.”
Greene’s story continues in a predictably cornball manner, but, being an early anti-GPK story, it’s missing a key element — rage about the front of the cards. Many early stories focused on those terribly hurtful awards on the back, and not the illustrations on the front. In early December, Philadelphia Daily News columnist Carol Towarnicky jumped on the bandwagon, bemoaning elements like the Ugly Award, while only briefly focusing on the Kids. “Even the bubblegum that’s included,” she wrote, “won’t settle your stomach when you see the images being sold to grade school children.” She then went on to praise the imperfect He-Man — which also depicts skeletons, she reasoned — for at least having “a moral” to its story. Adding more fuel to the flames? It was Christmas time, and GPKs were a hot item.From the Pacifica Tribune on December 12, 1985: "Dear Santa, I want a bike and Garbage Pail Kids stickers. I want clothes, too. Thats it! THANK YOU. Jenny Araquistaine, age 10, Del Mar Ave." And in the Daily Republican-Register on December 23: "Dear Santa, I hope you can get to my house. This is what I want for Christmas. I want a My Buddy, Cabbagepacht kid. A B-B gun and a four packs of garbage pail kids. And some baseball cards. A compouter and and computer desk. I hope you are cookies and milk. And I want some B-B too with my gun. And I want a Pound Puppy. Have a Merry Christmas and a happy New Year. And see you next year by. love, Jay Pettyjohn." Things were about to get fun. And not just for schoolkids and collectors.
Bad Publicity, Norman Liss, and the GPK Phenomenon. Christmas came and went without any noticeable opinion column attacks, but when the papers started up their rabble-rousing again in January, “Topps Spokesman Norman Liss” became the main character we all needed. Liss’ job, essentially, was to laugh off any controversy and assure parents and fist-shaking columnists that this was just a limited run series and people were making a big deal out of nothing. Topps, he pointed out, had done this sort of stuff before — Garbage Candy in 1975, Rat Fink Cards, Ugly Stickers, and more. They came and went without much hullabaloo.But a funny thing happened on the way to limiting GPKs to just one series — demand was through the roof, and frothy media people thinking they were taking ethical stands (not unlike He-Man) were actually just helping to boost the popularity of the cards. Liss even referred to the Greene column as helpful in driving sales.
On January 18, 1986, South Dakota’s Argus-Leader quoted a local distributor who estimated his 28,000 packs of GPK would sell out in a week. In a January 27 story in Louisville’s Courier-Journal, it was reported that the Convenient Food Mart chain had decided to pull the cards off their shelves. Liss noted that the action would mean little to overall sales, as “most stores can’t get enough of them.” The paper talked to a franchisee of Convenient Food Marts who defiantly said he wouldn’t pull the cards from his store because they sold so well. And Terry Smith, a local Louisville distributor, noted that Garbage Pail Kids were outselling Snickers — the No. 1 candy bar in America — 13 to 1.“There’s no way we’re going to get out of that business,” Smith said. At the end of the month, a school in White Plains, NY had banned GPK cards. In February, Liss was talking about a third series on the way (this was obviously no longer a limited one-series run) and noted that the cards “cannot be made fast enough” to satisfy demand. Liss also had a classic quote in “Education Week,” noting that “kids are very much into garbage.” The New York Times eventually entered the fray, reporting on three more schools that banned the cards. But the paper also found a group of parents who didn’t mind GPK, as the cards might encourage children to read, “even if the subject matter is Leaky Lindsey.”In May, the LA Times reported on another school ban — not because the cards were gross or in bad taste, but because the constant demand and trading created, according to the principal, “a little black market so we had to squelch it.” The story also mentioned a store owner who was price gouging packs up to 45 cents (they retailed for 25 cents) and noted that cards could be found in liquor stores.
By the time July rolled around, people were still expressing disgust at the cards, which had been out for over a year at that point. Some went a little over the top.“Topps is deliberately trying to subvert the tranquility of our children,” A. James Manchin, then the Treasurer of West Virginia said. “I believe Topps is that little portion of hell that never caught fire.”By this point, however, it was fruitless. The more Manchin-types brought what they thought was negative attention to the cards, the more popular they became. Liss noted that Topps, now on a fourth series, had “three shifts working” and even brought in extra equipment, and they still couldn’t keep up with demand. The head cashier at an Orlando Kay-Bee told the Orlando Sentinel that “the phone rings all day with people wanting to know if we’ve got them.”Garbage Pail Kids had won. As Series 6 cards were being run off three printing machines overnight, parents everywhere had to learn the difference between wax packs and rack packs.
The Garbage Pail Kids Legacy Endures. On August 7, 1987, the Masters of the Universe movie, featuring He-Man and, of course, a story involving a skeleton but with a moral, was released. Two weeks later, on August 21, The Garbage Pail Kids Movie premiered. In what must have been a very confusing time period for Carol Towarnicky, the movies ended up playing side by side in theaters across the country. As for Bob Greene? By the time February 1986 rolled around, he had moved on to offering poorly aged opinions on the Challenger explosion, including an exercise pitting the shuttle tragedy against the Kennedy Assassination and stating that, “within two years, very few people will remember the date of the Challenger explosion.” And the Garbage Pail Kids? After 40 years, they’re still releasing sets, books, and pop culture ephemera.

The week of July 28, 2025, the Topps main page had the 40th release posted within their 'Trending Now' section and listed as '2025 Worst of Garbage Pail Kids - 40th Anniversary', and the GPK landing page stating, "Upcoming Releases: 2025 Worst of Garbage Pail Kids - 40th Anniversary - Coming July 30th at 1pm ET". Topps also send out a blast email the same day, around 6:30pm CT, also stating the set was 'Coming Soon', with the 'Trending' image.

On July 30, 2025, the 40th Anniversary boxes dropped on Topps.com without the 'Pre-Order' tagline, and cost $89.99 and $899.99, rather then the previous $79.99 and $799.99 pricetags. Although Topps promoted a 1pm ET release time, the product dropped at the usual 12pm ET timeframe. The case SOLD OUT under five minutes and the hobby boxes SOLD OUT within ten minutes. The boxes posted to the UK website for £80.00, also SOLD OUT in record time. An blast email, titled 'Now Live: 2025 Worst of Garbage Pail Kids - 40th Anniversary!', went out the same day at 11am CT, and stated, "Collect the entire 100-card Base Set featuring some of the most popular GPK characters of all time! — GPK artist TOM Bunk, one of the original gangster (OG) artists that has special sketch cards, autograph cards, and signed printing plates, found within the release, along with next generation GPK artists JOE Simko, BRENT Engstrom, and Smokin' JOE McWilliams, but is the only Original Series (OS) GPK artist to participate for the 40th anniversary set. Bunk mentioned, via correspondence, that he signed 4000 cards; 500 x8 cards, plus sketches & plates.



— On June 11, 2025, artist DAVE Gross took to his Facebook social media channel and stated, "The new Garbage Pail Kids Worst Of set is coming out soon. I only painted four cards for it and found out two were pulled so down to [only] two now. I didn't have time to work on the Homage to Adam Bomb subset or do any sketch cards so... not much for me to say about the set. Here's one of my pulled paintings for the Wacky Packages GPK boxes. OS 1 Box." Gross also added that "There was an additional subset everyone worked on that was completely pulled. That will be in a set coming in 2026 instead." Gross also posted on June 12, 2025, the same message as the 11th, but changed two parts, "... Here's the second of my pulled paintings for the Wacky Packages GPK boxes. OS 6 Box." NOTE: There's a slight chance these could show up in next year's GPK Universe set.



— On July 24, 2025, artist DAVE Gross took to his Facebook social media channel and stated, "The new Garbage Pail Kids Worst Of set is out now. I only painted four cards for it and found out two were pulled so down to two now. Here's one of the two Wacky Packages GPK cards I painted for the subset that actually made it into the set.", and to his Instagram channel and mentioned, "Garbage Pail Kids Cheap Toys Wacky Packages card I painted for the new Worst Of retail set out this week." NOTE: The release was pushed back to July 30, 2025, in the U.S., but there were posts that collectors in the UK were ripping boxes. On July 25, 2025, Gross shared his 'Ghastly Pail Kids' card image, stating, "Oh, The Horrorible Garbage Pail Kids/Wacky Packages mashup I painted for the new Worst Of GPK retail set out this week."

— Next generation artist, BRENT Engstrom, is one of the only original gangster (OG) artists that had a character picked within the base set, along with the Original Series (OS) artists. Engstrom mentioned he signed 500 cards for this character. I believe this is the first release to have signed printing plates, which mixes things up a bit from previous releases. The following Wacky Packages GPK Boxes by artist BRENT Engstrom remain unpublished: Gutter Punk Kids (OS10) / STINKERS — BUBBLE SCUM, SkiniKins / SKINI FIGURES (MiniKins), and Garbage Impale Kids / KIDS AT SLAY (Kids at Play). NOTE: There's a slight chance these could show up in next year's GPK Universe set.




— On June 11, 2025, artist Smokin' JOE McWilliams took to his Facebook social media channel and stated, "GPK Was the Worst 2025 set just dropped... Here's the piece I created for the Homage to Adam Bomb subset... although it looks like it was not included in the release. (Looks like I'll have a new die-cut sticker at the next Gross Card Con!") NOTE: There's a slight chance this could show up in next year's GPK Universe set.



— On June 11, 2025, artist JOE Simko took to his social media channels and stated, "My Abstract Expressionist Adam Bomb painting for the Garbage Pail Kids 40th Anniversary set." See anniversary mascot image at the top of the page. Per correspondence, Simko stated he signed 500 autograph cards and completed just one sketch card. On July 31, 2025, Simko posted an image of the Homage to Garbahj autograph card, stating, "GPK 40th Anniversary set out now. Limited number of this card floating around in random packs."



— On August 01, 2025, artist Smokin' JOE McWilliams took to Facebook to share an unpublished piece, stating, "Topps just released 'The Worst of GPK: 40th Anniversary' series... mostly OS characters but I did contribute new artwork to a couple subsests. Sadly, a few of my pieces got left behind. Here is a peek at one of my Wacky GPK boxes that didn't cut the mustart... enjoy!", poking fun at the 1980's GPK Buttons release, and another one posted on August 08, 2025. stating, "... Here is a peek at another one of my Wacky GPK boxes that didn't cut the mustard... Maybe all the news about alien ships headed our way spooked them?", spoofing the 2016S1 'American as Apple Pie in Your Face!' release. NOTE: There's a slight chance this could show up in next year's GPK Universe set.



— A total of twenty artists worked on the Homage to Garbahj (sounds like 'Garbage') subset, including artist JOE Simko... intrepretive guest artists, reminiscent to the non-GPK artists mixed in with regular GPK artists for the IDW Comic releases. A total of 40 paintings, for forty years, was created to pay tribute to the forever infamous OS1 ADAM Bomb character. Topps had told GPK News that five artists had failed to return their autograph cards back in time, so ten characters can be located without autograph cards. Cart artwork shown by Hag Fersner. — The '40th Anniversary' logo began to show up on pre-orders and advertising for GPK licensed product in early 2025, celebrating the forty years since the Garbage Pail Kids that were released in 1985, including license holders for Abrams (ComicArts) and Get-A-Grip Skateboards. The four 'BONUS STICKERS' card images are brand-new artwork by GPK artists JOE Simko, BRENT Engstrom, DAVID Gross, and Smokin' JOE McWilliams, paying tribute to the 40-year anniversary. — The same images used for the Abrams 'BONUS STICKERS' die-cut cards, mentioned above, with artwork by Engstrom, McWilliams, Gross, and Simko, respectively, were originally created for the 40th Anniversary celebration, used for the 21-piece completed puzzles within the 40 Anniversary release. All artwork can also be found as card characters for Greenlight Collectibles 40th anniversary vehicles The artwork for the artist DAVID Gross piece can also be located as a card image released for an exclusive SDCC 2025 Greenlight Collectibles GPK vehicle, as a variant for Thrilljoy Collectibles ADAM Bomb GPK figure, and PSA Magazine cover. Artist BRENT Engstrom's character can also be located as a Thrilljoy Collectible character, and artist JOE Simko's character can be found as a bobblehead. — The National Bobblehead Hall of Fame & Museum also released a 40th Anniversary GPK Logo, Leaky LINDSAY (w/ birthday cupcake), and Dead TED (w/ birthday party hat) bobbleheads, modeled after the 40th Anniversary/Worst mascot characters and main logo for the set and release. Expected in March 2026. More information can be found within the GPK License 2025 page.



— Per GPK News on social media, "Adam Bomb & Nasty Nick will make an appearance in 2025 Topps Shoebox Treasures.", and within his website, "Both Adam Bomb and Nasty Nick appear on the checklist for 2025 Topps Shoebox Treasures by Andy Friedman. The Adam Bomb card is being used by Topps to promote the set. There a chance the cards will also be available in a number of parallels. The set also looks to be giving away the original paintings form the set, as both GPK characters also appear on the 1/1 Original Paintings checklist. The product will be an available Aug. 28, 2025." — Along with a much small production run, which make it impossible to even complete a regular A-base set with one box, let alone several, the printing has a much lower quality of card stock, off cutting (rough cuts), dark numbers on dark backgrounds, and incorrect nameplate & logo colours.

— On Friday, August 15, 2025, Topps took to their social media channels to announce the 2025 MLB Bowman Chrome release that would contain GPK baseball player caricatures by artist DAVID Gross. Additionally, Topps and PSA Card announced that PSA Magazine would have two covers for the 40th anniversary of GPK, a sports cover with Mets® player JUAN Soto (& premium members would receive a sports GPK card) and a pop culture & TCG GPK cover (& premium members would receive a non-sports GPK card). Per PSA Card, "Garbage Day: PSA Magazine & Garbage Pail Kids. Garbage Pail Kids cover variants and exclusive promo cards are coming to both editions of PSA Magazine in October for first time ever to celebrate four memorable decades of GPK. All Collectors Club members will receive a collectible cover, but only Collectors Club Premium members will receive a promo card. To receive one of these exclusive promo cards with the October issue, join Collectors Club Premium or upgrade your existing membership by August 31."



— During December 2025, Zion Cases released three different GPK slab row cases along with a 40th Anniversary 'Sticker Pack' which included the four 40th Anniversary GPK characters, celebrating the 40th birthday, along with the 40th GPK logo and 'PEEL HERE' stickers. — Cards 10a Barfin' BART and 10b Projectile GILES, with artwork by JOHN Pound from OS4, was incorrectly named after the 2014S2 (81a Barfy BART and) 81b Projectile GILES, by artist JOE Simko, rather than the OS4 nomenclature of 162a Yicchy MICKEY and 162b Barfin' BART. For cards 29a Disgustin' JUSTIN and 29b Vile KYLE, with artwork by JOE Simko, Topps used the artwork for 2020S2, Cards 9a Disgustin' JUSTIN and 9b Motorized SCOOTER, within the 'All Grown Up' subset, rather than the OS2 artwork, for cards 47a/b, by artist JOHN Pound.

Per ToppsRIPPED, their definition of a sketch card: Sketch Cards are one-of-one, hand-drawn cards created by the licensed artist from a particular set. They are the same size as regular trading cards and include the artist’s signature.

The twenty-eighth major Garbage Pail Kids set to include sketch cards (some numbering 1/1—one-of-a-kind) found within hobby boxes only, including the Chrome S7 release. The last major release, Kids at Play, had sixty-eight sketch artists involved, and the first-time chrome release had a staggering ninety-five sketch cartists within its ranks, with eighteen rookies, and this release has 101 sketch card participants, into the three-digit numbers, due to the 'OG' sketch artists. These 'OG' sketch cards have a different look than the new standard sketch cards, celebrating the anniversary.

Staring with the Chrome S7 release, the Topps Company rolled out a new sketch-card format, adopting a universal blank card for all hobby exclusive and hobby/retail release going forward; so considering no longer theme-specific, there won't be a way of associating what release the sketch card came from, but this release does have '40TH ANNIVERSARY' printed under the GPK header. This new, four-card tiered system has done away with the panoramic sketches, triptych, loaded puzzles, etcetera, from the line-up, and will focus more on artwork quality assurance and control.

I was in third grade in 1987 when I got my first wax pack. I would beg my mom to swing by the quick stop every day after school so I could get a couple packs. I remember them costing only $1 a pack. I’d draw them on my school folders and on my desk. Never would I imagine I’d be drawing them for @topps It’s a wonderful feeling having people excited to pull my cards and having them say they are chasing or on the hunt for them. It’s a very surreal feeling. Thanks to everyone for all the kind words and support over this journey. Here’s to the next 40 years."

I did 60 sketchcards (10 Green/50 Black) for this release and added something special to commemorate four decades of #GPK being sold and collected around the world. On a big chunk of my sketches I did "GPK Around the World" sketches featuring a character in a landmark setting of a country where GPK has been sold. I even added a little cameo from local wildlife. I'll be posting individual cards with info about the character, the location, and the wildlife over the next few months. And all of those teachers who banned GPK said it wasn't educational. I'd love to hear from all of you collectors in the comments. What country are you from and when did you first start collecting GPK. Make sure to follow so you don't miss a post.
