SERIES INTRODUCTION

In February 2012, during a long break from the All-New series and after the final release of the Flashback sets, Topps released the first ever Garbage Pail Kids magnet set measuring 2.5 x 3.5 inches that came 4 magnet cards to a pack.  Each pack cost $3.99 (SRP), and came without twin cards (only the A names for the four re-released images).
The novelty set was art directed by Jeff Zapata and later oversaw by Colin Walton who handled the packaging and magnet changes during the postponement of release. The main concept artist and final artwork artist for the series was Mark Pingitore, completing 12 of the 16 images; whereas John Pound had completed the four re-released images during the 80's.

FUN FACTS & TIDBITS

1.
The four characters to kickstart the set are all Original Series Images completed by John Pound; the iconic images are found on the display material and packaging. Each pack comes with four magnets and 2 pieces of gummy candy; one original series character magnet can be found with three other new card images -- the wrapper image matches the magnet character found in the pack; the wrappers measure 5 x 7 inches.

2. Anyone with a sharp eye, and knowing the same artist created all of the new artwork for the release, would spot The Artist's Initials on the toy block in the foreground of card 10 of 16 "Phan TOM". The set is brought to you by the letters M and P, for Mark Pingitore.

3. The Wrapper "Die-Cut" Shapes are different for all four wrappers, reminiscent, but not the same as the original series sticker die-cuts; a nice nostalgic throwback. It is also interesting to point out that this is the first Topps card release to have a suggested age range on a wrapper ... best suited for "AGES 6+". This actually makes me feel uneasy-free when purchasing the product, like when LEGO stopped putting for "Ages 6-12" on their building sets.

4. Only the A names for the re-released images are found within this set; the twelve new characters have only a single name, No Twin Name, similar to the All-New Series and Flashback bonus cards, which can be found with only one name for the ANS releases, or the A name for the re-released images of the Flashback sets.

5.
Like the GPK GIANT 15 card series release of yesteryears, the Magnet Checklist can be found on the back of the wrapper.

GPK HISTORY SECTION

1. The original Mock-Up Wrappers contained characters intended for an October 2011 release -- to be distributed in August of 2011 around the Halloween holiday season; an issue with the candy production arised and the set was placed on hold until February of 2012; thankfully, it wasn't shelved like so many other GPK ideas. The ADAM Bomb and Beasty BOYD (the wrapper was changed to a dark blue background) characters were kept for the final wrapper artwork, but Nasty NICK (OS1) and Bony TONY (OS4) were replaced with the Potty SCOTTY and Ghastly ASHLEY characters. One would assume that Nasty NICK and Bony TONY would have been found on the tentative checklist for the initial set.

2. GPK artist Mark Pingitore sketched out several concept pieces that did not make it into the magnet set; including the following excellent ideas that were not considered: an Obama concept which would have been a great companion piece to OS2's 46a "Rappin' RON" and 46b "RAY Gun"; a concept of the Invisible Man's getup, a Rapunzel parody involving her letting down her nose hair, a cowboy outlaw piece (with suggested name), and a gladiator concept (with suggested name).

3. Minus some very slight position changes, the Mock-Up Cards found on the dealer sell sheets are very close to their final counterparts. The biggest changes being the disco ball light rays of STAN Alive and the smoke from Sun BERNIE are now on top of the GPK header. NOAH Constricter's GPK logo has been changed to blue, and all four name plates have been shortened.

4. Two sets of digital Dealer Sell Sheets were created for the original 2011 and 2012 releases (click the sell sheet above in the Product Overview section to see all four images). Two images, as stated further above were replaced and the candy images are quite different; with only a small amount of written material changed. The full toilet bowl image for Potty SCOTTY can be found on the final wrapper, only the plunger is slightly cut off from the mock-up sell sheet wrapper.
