SERIES INTRODUCTION

Release Date: JUNE 1987

The four print runs of the 9th series Garbage Pail Kids are very similar. However, one of the print runs can be found with card 355b "Semi COLIN" with or without a card number. The black dye is completely absent in the corner where the number should be, and is very faded in the GPK header, including the "®" (registered trademark) symbol on the right hand side. The first print run contains card 355b with a card number and the "25¢" logo on the wrapper.  The second print run contains card 355b with and without a card number and the "all new" logo on the wrapper. Because of this printing error, this is the rarest and most expensive card in the GPK collection to date for the original series. The third print run contains card 355b with a card number and the "25¢" logo on the wrapper. The fourth print run contains card 355b with a card number and the "all new" logo on the wrapper.  In the past, any series manufactured in Canada was always a last print run for that given series (Ex: 3rd, 4th, and 5th series), but it is the first two print runs for the 9th series. As the 8th series GPK was being produced in the U.S., after the OAA court case, the 9th series was being started in Canada, to complete both series for release since any finished artwork of GPK could still be released before Topps had to make future releases look less like Cabbage Patch Kids.

GPK HISTORY SECTION

1. Tom Bunk's 10th Series Unpublished Box color rough artwork, final artwork, And 9th Series Poster sketch artwork and poster layout from 1987. This artwork was completed before the new model sheets came into affect, but ended up not being used for either the 9th or 10th series sets. The Kids have the Cabbage Patch look - a very, violent and cool picture. The box design also hints at the fact that the packaging was going to be orange. The 9th series took over the overall package design of the 10th series unpublished box art with the orange color and green straight GPK banner. The 10th series design was changed because of the new look that the Kids had to take on. Also, The name "Garbage Pail Kids" had been planned on being changed to "The Garbage Gang", most likely awaiting the outcome of the trial to see if Topps could keep the GPK logo, but only the shape of it had to be changed to a banner style (10th series and on). The cards later released in the U.K. and internationally were translated to "The Garbage Gang". The "GG" logo can be found on the backs of the 9th series cards that took over the overall 10th series layout.

2. In the summer of 1987, the Garbage Pail Kids Movie was released to extremely poor reviews. Not only was the acting bad with a horrible story line, the GPK characters themselves, 7 in all, were very unrealistic and very fake looking. The ads for the movie can be found on the 9th and 10th series wrappers and advertisment posters. The international name for the movie was The Garbage Gang. Characters: "NAT Nerd", "VALERIE Vomit", "Foul PHIL", "ALI Gator", "Greaser GREG", "MESSY Tessie", and "Windy WINSTON" rounded out the GPK cast. Atlantic releasing Corporation printed off "special collectors edition" postcards that measure 4x6 during the GPK and GG movie release -- a card was most likely made for each character in the movie. The MGM movie was released on DVD for the first time in the Fall of 2005, and repackaged for a Canadian release in the Fall of 2012.

(repackaged Canadian release : 09/11/12)

3. This Tom Bunk Unpublished GPK's was finished in 1987 and was an earlier sketch idea for cards 359a "Kerosene KERRY" and 359b "Blazin' BLAKE", intended for the 9th series but reworked, with the burnt edge removed.

4. This Tom Bunk Reworked GPK was finished in 1987 and was was an idea sketch intended for the 9th series,
later redone and painted by James Warhola to become 373a "DESI Island" and 373b "Marooned MAUREEN", with the palm tree removed and paper added.

5. Artist Tom Bunk had Different Renditions For several of his 9th series Color Roughs. Below is an example of one of these various color versions that you can compare to the actual final artwork for cards 349a "Polluted PERCY" and 349b "Barnacle BILL".

6. Artist and writer Jay Lynch Completed the gags for the Comic Backs for "Would We Lie To You?" finishing the color roughs and final art. Gary Whitney helped out with inking and lettering.

7. Uncut GPK Sheets were auctioned off of eBay, through the Topps Vault in the Summer of 2006; A front and back image for the 9th series Garbage Pail Kids set.

8. The 356a "Momma MIA" and 356b "Electric SHARI" character also had "MICHELLE Shocked" as a Potential Name. The name comes from the music singer of the same name who became popular in the late 1980's.

9. Flowcharts were created For the later GPK series', which showed the art director how the work of the new set was going -- which artist was working on which concept piece, and the stage in which the painting had been completed. Often, concept pieces were denied and the department tried to work them into later sets. A list of additional concept pieces was found at the bottom of the flowchart in case pieces could not be used. The 9th series contained the following ideas which either replaced denied concept pieces within the set, were saved for a later series, or never saw the light of day: "rolling dough" (9th), "hot air balloons" (9th), "piggy bank", "hanging on coat hook" (9th), "fat girl with girdle - eyes and zits popping" (10th), "shark out of sink biting hand with toothpaste", "generic Eric - UPC" (TCT), "filmstrip", "manequin", "lightbulb" (15th), "middle finger" (unpublished), "kid in jar" (unpublished), "butterfly pinned" (14th), "VC Artie - VCR" (15th).
