SERIES INTRODUCTION

Release Date: NOVEMBER 1986

The three print runs of the 6th series Garbage Pail Kids are exactly the same except for their wrappers -- there are no card variations within this set. The first print run wrapper has the "25¢" logo with a yellow star. The second print run wrapper has the "25¢" logo with a white star (to help star and price stand out). And, the third print run wrapper has no "25¢"logo.  It is possible that both the yellow and white star variations are the same print run and only the wrapper was changed to make the "25¢"star stand out, or it may have been changed for the next print run.

FUN FACTS & TIDBITS

1. The only series to have a "25¢" Star Change.  In the first print run, it is a Yellow "25¢" Star.  For the second print run, the "25¢" logo was changed to a White "25¢" Star (this made the price stand out).

2. The series has two cards with the Same First Name -- cards 208b "Teed-Off TOM" and 218a "TOM Thumb".

3. The only series with An Object as a Name Bar. Cards 210a "Intense PAYNE" and 210b "First ADA" with a Band-Aid as a name bar.

4. The first series to Not depict "ADAM Bomb" On the Wrapper, but instead, a different 1st series Kid -- the character from cards 14a "Potty SCOTTY" and 14b "JASON Basin".

5. The only series to have a card with the Name in bold, but Smaller Than the Word. Card 237a "Totaled TODD".

6. The second series with a Light Pink Name Bar. (dark blue, dark pink, yellow, red, and light pink ... no light blue in this series.)

7. The first series to have a card showcasing Character Names From Previous Releases. Cards 246a "JOHN John" and 246b "Flushing FLOYD" pay tribute to two older GPK characters whose names are written on the bathroom wall. The 3rd series character (220a "Babbling BROOKE" and) 220b "Jelly KELLY" with a hand print above her name... and the 1st series character 14a "Potty SCOTTY" (and 14b "JASON Basin") with the words "Wuz Here" below his name.

8. The only sideways card with the 'Peel Here' Arrow in the wrong corner.  Cards 241a "Old GLORIA" and 241b "JOSE Can You See".

9. The third series to have a card showcasing Sticker Images From Previous Releases. The Card images for 248a "HECTOR Collector" and 248b "G.P. KAY" pay tribute to several older GPK card images whose stickers are stuck to the character's body. The following cards images listed top to bottom: 2nd series 45a "Leaky LINDSAY" and 45b "Messy TESSIE"; Unknown character; 1st series 28a "Oozy SUZY" and 28b "Meltin' MELISSA"; 2nd series 51a "RUSSELL Muscle" and 51b "BRETT Sweat"; 2nd series 66a "MATT Ratt" and 66b "RACHEL Rodent"; 103a "Wriggley RENE" and 103b "Curly CARLA" (?); 2nd series 77a "Ghastly ASHLEY" and 77b "Acne AMY"; 1st series 40a "Unstitched MITCH" and 40b "Damaged DON"; and 1st series 19a "Corroded CARL" and 19b "Crater CHRIS".

10.
The only series with a Wrapper that does not have the Bar Code in a white box.

11. The first GPK series with No Variations.

GPK HISTORY SECTION

1.
The Original final Artwork Piece completed by John Pound for cards 248a "HECTOR Collector" and 248b "G.P. KAY" is owned by Mark Newgarden, the art director for the sixteen original GPK series' in the 80's. The piece was completed before the 6th series release, but was later redone by artist James Warhola. Unlike the piece done by Warhola (with 9 sticker images), there are no distinguishable GPK images from previous series' that can be found on Pound's "Kid" (with 16 stickers), but there are twice as many stickers and a floor area.

2. This 6th Series Wrapper Artwork was created for the release by Tom Bunk, who created all the wrapper artwork for the 16 original series sets, before the final version. This wrapper mock-up is a solid character line-drawing of John Pound's 1st series character featured on cards 14a "Potty SCOTTY" and 14b "JASON Basin"; the first time Topps deviated from the 1st series card characters 8a "ADAM Bomb" and 8b "Blasted BILLY", the mascot of GPK, on the wrapper or box of any series prior. The other big change is the ALL NEW series announcement box changing to a jagged half-circle. The Topps logo will be moved and a large yellow moon-like background circle added for the final wrapper image.

3.
Poster #18 - "BUSTED!" from the Garbage Pail Kids Poster set, is used for the U.S. 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th series Advertisement Posters with an enlarged, straight GPK banner (pictured above in the "Series Overview"). The image can also be found as card #14 "BUSTED!" in the Giant GPK 15 card sticker set with a curved GPK banner rather than the straight GPK banner. The GPK images found within the picture are listed within the "Fun Facts and Tidbits" section of the Giant Series page.

4
. Pictured below is an unpublished 2nd series GPK idea that was also considered for the 6th series GPK set. The image was used for the GPK Poster set (Poster # 7 - "Eat My Face!, Garbage Pail Kids") and later used for the 16th series unpublished card 639a "GUY Pie" and 639b "Pepperoni Toni" and again later in the All-New Series 1 set for card 9a "Cheesy CHARLIE" and 9b "Pizza Face CHASE" (notice the four fingers on the character instead of the three fingers of later character models).

5
. During the GPK card production process, a "Blue Lines" sheet is created and used within the correction process of the set ... below is one blue line proof card example as auctioned off on eBay through the Topps Vault in 2006. Card 241b "JOSE Can You See" (see the 5th Series "GPK History" section for several additional images).

6. Flowcharts
were created For the later GPK series', which showed the art director how the work of the new set was going -- which artist was working on which concept piece, and the stage in which the painting had been completed. Often, concept pieces were denied and the department tried to work them into later sets. A list of additional concept pieces was found at the bottom of the flowchart in case pieces could not be used. The 6th series contained the following ideas which either replaced denied concept pieces within the set, were saved for a later series, or never saw the light of day: "kid as flag" (6th), "kid as welcome mat" (6th), "matchbook kid" (12th), "in water cooloer" (6th), "kangaroo" (unpublished), "cheerleader coming apart", "squeezed face" (8th), "pumping self with bike-pump" (8th), "blowing bubblegum" (9th), "pilgrim in stocking", "MadMax", "trashcan belly" (6th), "exploding head" (6th), "ventriloquist hand" (6th), "wrecked car" (6th), "skeleton flasher", "butcher block" (6th), "Mr. Dirt (Mr. Clean)", "beetle" (unpublished).

7. Uncut
GPK Sheets were auctioned off of eBay, through the Topps Vault in the Summer of 2006; A front and back image for the 6th series GPK set. (# 4-490-05-04-6)

8
. The 6th series Comic Artwork on the back of the cards was completed By artist Jay Lynch. The comics were a Topps spoof on themselves poking fun at their popular Bazooka Joe comics that came wrapped in the Bazooka gum product. Jay Lynch finished both the art roughs and the final artwork for the comic backs.
