SERIES INTRODUCTION

Release Date: SEPTEMBER 1987

The first series to have the new GPK look with popped eyes, hard cracked surfaces, doll joints, slick hair, and only four fingers. The three print runs of the 10th series Garbage Pail Kids are almost the same except for their wrappers. The first print run has the "25¢" logo with a green wrapper code and a black wrapper code. The second print run has the "25¢" logo and a black wrapper code on the wrapper. There is no way to distinguish between these two wrappers when sealed. The third print run has no "25¢" logo on the wrapper. It is not confirmed whether or not there were two or three print runs, there are two -07- wrappers with a subtle change of the green wrapper code. Also, it is uncomfirmed as to which print runs the "white boxes" and "incorrect die-cuts" can be found, I have only found them in the second print run.

8. The series contains the second card "signed" by an artist ... The Topps company has never given any written credit for their GPK artists ... Cards 393a "JESS Express" and 393b "Choo-Choo TRINA" have "Peeping TOM" graffitied on the subway train, the double meaning mentioning the 3rd series character 114b "Peepin' TOM", and for the artist Tom Bunk. Other GPK characters names can also be found on the train including: 1st series 8a "ADAM Bomb", 1st series 5b "JAY Decay" written twice, 1st series 22a "Junky JEFF", 1st series 33a "Mad MIKE", 3rd series 116a "Eerie ERIC", 4th series 126a "Armpit BRITT", 5th series 205a "Hot ROD", and 7th series 279a "Short MORT".

GPK HISTORY SECTION

1. After the lawsuit, with GPK stickers still selling, Topps had to recreate the overall look of the cards including the GPK logo (which went from being curved to a banner style) and the appearance of the characters. Tom Bunk was instructed to create GPK Model Sheets to show these changes which were then sent out to the artists as guidelines for the remaining releases. Below you will find a model sheet sketch and artwork for the four final model sheets.

"At some point (starting with the 10th series) we had to change the appearance of the Garbage Pail Kids because they looked too much like the Cabbage Patch Kids. So I had to make a model sheet showing the changes. Even the logo had to be changed, the eyes changed, the mouth, etcetera." - Tom Bunk

Eventually, a few model sheets found their way on eBay.

Model sheet showing the new logo and three different profiles of a character. "Garbage Pail Kids" are now drawn so that they're made out of a hard plastic rather than cloth which can crack.

Model sheet showing full character with jointed arms and legs. "Garbage Pail Kids" are now 'duck footed' with their feet facing in when standing or sitting. No longer in "Cabbage Patch Kids" fashion.

Model sheet portraying different character emotions and facial features. "Garbage Pail Kids" now have the new oval eye and 4 digits on hand and foot. Slicked or normal hair, no longer looking yarn-like.

Model sheet showing complete characters in motion. "Garbage Pail Kids" without "Cabbage Patch Kids" attire now wearing normal kids clothes, different nose and mouth, and ears that stick out.

2. Tom Bunk's 10th Series Unpublished Box color rough artwork, final artwork, And 9th Series Poster sketch artwork and poster layout from 1987. This artwork was completed before the new model sheets came into affect, but ended up not being used for either the 9th or 10th series sets. The Kids have the Cabbage Patch look - a very, violent and cool picture. The box design also hints at the fact that the packaging was going to be orange. The 9th series took over the overall package design of the 10th series unpublished box art with the orange color and green straight GPK banner. The 10th series design was changed because of the new look that the Kids had to take on. Also, The name "Garbage Pail Kids" had been planned on being changed to "The Garbage Gang", most likely awaiting the outcome of the trial to see if Topps could keep the GPK logo, but only the shape of it had to be changed to a banner style (10th series and on). The cards later released in the U.K. and internationally were translated to "The Garbage Gang". The "GG" logo can be found on the backs of the 9th series cards that took over the overall 10th series layout.

3. In October of 2005, the Topps Vault auctioned off two unpublished acetate pieces for the 10th GPK series through eBay. The first piece was a name change for cards 385a "PHIL 'Er Up" and 385b "Chuckin' CHARLIE" who's name was changed from 385b "LUKE Puke" -- this name had already been used in the 5th GPK series for card 170b "LUKE Puke". The second, very interesting, unpublished piece was drawn and painted by John Pound, card 408a "Hole In JUAN" and 408b "LOUIE Kablooey" ... but like the 16th series unpublished Tom Bunk gun piece, it was pulled at the last minute (for the sensitive issue of suicide) and replaced with cards 408a "Lickin' LEON" and 408b "Rat-Sucker RANDALL". The image for "Hole In JUAN" was finally released in the Abrams 2012 Garbage Pail Kids book detailing the original series artwork for the first five GPK sets as bonus card 1 of 4.

4. For the 10th series, Bill Wray who later went on to do incredible work with Ren and Stimpy was asked To Draw a GPK by Art Spiegelman. Even though only One GPK was created and published, cards 403a "HUNTER Punter" and 403b "Fractured FRANCIS", another rough sketch was turned in several times but never used which was the idea of a body builder's arm with the "Kids" head as a bicep muscle. Because of being too busy, Art was unable to direct Bill, so no other work was completed.

"I was heavily art directed so it's hard to tell if the piece was touched up or not. I can tell that it's my painting, one of the give away's it's mine is how the color is kind of normal, Topps wanted garish color." - Bill Wray

5. Artist Tom Bunk had Different Renditions For several of his 10th series Color Roughs. Below is an example of one of these various color versions that you can compare to the actual final artwork for cards 383a "Itchy MITCH" and 349b "Raked JAKE".

6. This John Pound Unpublished GPK was finished in 1987 and was intended for the 10th series GPK set but rejected by Topps.

7. The Original Concept Idea and pencil rough for 410a "Scratching Pole PAUL" and 410b "Clawed CLAUDE" came from artist John Pound and later sold to James Warhola to complete.

8. This James Warhola Unpublished GPK was finished in 1987 and was intended for the 10th series GPK set but rejected by Topps, along with this unknown artist artwork, portraying a brick crashing through a church's stained glass window.

9. These Tom Bunk Unpublished GPK's were finished in 1987 and were intended for the 10th series GPK set but rejected by Topps
(arms and hands with mitts added for final artwork piece)

10. Artist and writer Jay Lynch Completed the gags for the Comic Backs artwork, finishing the color roughs and final art. Gary Whitney helped out with working on the final artwork.

11. In 2006 GPK artist Luis Diaz, who has worked on the "All-New" GPK sets starting with ANS2, designed a "Munny" figurine -- made by Kidrobot, a limited edition toy retailer during the "designer toy" or "urban vinyl" movement. They are blank figures that come in black or white, and always have the same hominoid shape: two legs, a round tummy, two stumpy arms, and a head with a little bump on it. Within the world of toy enthusiasts, Munnys modified by celebrities and artists are selling for big bucks. Diaz disigned his figurine after the 10th series GPK character 400a "Vericose WAYNE" and 400b "ELAINE Vein". Diaz's Munny showed up on the front cover of the Miami NEW TIMES publication (January 25-31, 2007 Vol. 21, Number 43).

12. Flowcharts were created For the later GPK series', which showed the art director how the work of the new set was going -- which artist was working on which concept piece, and the stage in which the painting had been completed. Often, concept pieces were denied and the department tried to work them into later sets. A list of additional concept pieces was found at the bottom of the flowchart in case pieces could not be used. The 10th series contained the following ideas which either replaced denied concept pieces within the set, were saved for a later series, or never saw the light of day: "buzzsaw" (reworked for 13th), "VCR" (15th), "dental flossing", "head out of butt - boxer" (14th), "pencils through eyes", "as a sneaker" (15th), "bag of GG with UPC", "tape dispenser" (11th), "roach motel", "trash can kid", "jester cutting off foot in guillotine - laughs", bagpipe (15th), "head in subway door" (ANS4), "maneating fish" (TCT), "wind up - key in eye", "wrung out kid - like towel" (11th).
